Enterprise Adviser Network

Dorset LEP is working with Career and Enterprise Company to develop a Dorset wide Enterprise Adviser Network. Its purpose is to create powerful, lasting connections between local businesses and the schools and colleges in their area. The network is intended to inspire and motivate young people and support them to make informed choices about their future.

The Enterprise Adviser Network will enable high calibre volunteers to work directly with the senior leadership team in secondary schools and colleges to support more effective connection to the world of work and develop, shape or add value to the school or college’s careers, enterprise and employer engagement strategy.

Through the Enterprise Adviser Network and existing relationships with employers, the offer from employers to schools will increase so that in time every young person should be able to access work related interventions at multiple points as they progress through their schooling.

Many schools already have excellent relationships with employers and engage with them in a variety of ways. The Careers and Enterprise Company has been set up to enhance these activities and not to replicate the good work that is going on. The Company will also work with the National Careers Service and the local Chambers to provide this service to schools.

Dorset LEP is facilitating the delivery of the network for Dorset and there are two Enterprise Coordinators who will be leading on the Enterprise Adviser Network:

Bournemouth and Poole

Catherine Beater is the Enterprise Coordinator for Bournemouth and Poole.  Catherine joins Bournemouth Borough Council & Borough of Poole Councils 14-19 Team, from Corfe Hills School where she was the Assistant Head-Teacher.

So far in Bournemouth and Poole 25 schools have signed up to the network and work has now started on recruiting Enterprise Advisers.

Dorset

Robert Firth is the Enterprise Coordinator for the rest of Dorset and is based at Dorset County Council.

16 schools in the rest of Dorset have signed an expression of interest to be a part of the Enterprise Adviser Network.

Enterprise Advisors

Enterprise Advisers are key to the network’s success. Across Dorset we are seeking business leaders to volunteer as Enterprise Advisers.

What makes a great Enterprise Adviser?

  • Passionate about unlocking the potential and enhancing the future prospects of young people
  • Committed to supporting a school or college for one academic year, eight hours per month
  • Credible with the leadership team of a school or college
  • Well connected within local business networks

The Enterprise Adviser’s first key task is to work with the school on identifying where employer encounters are strong and where there are gaps to be filled. Their job is not to get involved in the activities themselves (talks, careers events, interviews, workplace visits etc.), but rather to involve other employer colleagues to engage in these with the school.

If you are keen to be involved and would like to find out more about the role of Enterprise Adviser please contact Katherine May, Dorset LEP on kmay@bournemouth.ac.uk
